Paulínia Ecopark Biomethane Production

Company Grupo Orizon & Compass

State SP

Starts Operation 2025

Investment US$ 161 M

The Orizon Group, a major biogas producer in Brazil, announces a joint venture with Compass to purify biogas generated at the Paulínia Ecopark and convert it into biomethane, a renewable fuel valued for its environmental attributes. This project, located in São Paulo, one of Brazil's most industrialized areas, is the largest biomethane project in the country and contributes to the energy transition. Compass will invest up to R$355 million and hold a 51% stake in the company, with an initial investment of R$235 million. The agreement includes the sale of biogas for 20 years. Orizon will enter the new company with a 49% stake, ensuring biogas supply and implementation expertise. Production will start in 2025, with an initial biogas volume of about 180,000 m³/day, potentially reaching 300,000 m³/day with estimated initial investments of up to R$450 million. Last year, Orizon established Bio-E, its renewable energy division, aiming to have at least ten plants producing biomethane and/or electricity. The biomethane produced at the Paulínia Ecopark from urban waste is 100% renewable and has the same applications as natural gas, reducing greenhouse gas emissions by 95%. The project's biomethane volume would meet the residential natural gas consumption of approximately 550,000 people, according to information from the São Paulo State Secretary of Environment, Infrastructure, and Logistics.

Biodiesel Production in Curitiba

Company Grupo Potencial

The plant, expected to be completed within 18 to 24 months, aligns with Brazil's efforts to increase the use of biofuels and reduce carbon emissions. Additionally, infrastructure developments, such as a railway terminal, are planned to support the expansion.

Bioethanol Plants

Company Raizen

State SP

Starts Operation 2031

Investment U$S 4.8 B

Raízen plans to operate 20 new second-generation ethanol (E2G) plants by 2031. For this initiative, the company has set aside R$ 24 billion. Two mills have recently started construction in the interior of São Paulo. One of the new plants is attached to the Vale do Rosário Plant, in Morro Agudo, and the other to the Gasa Plant, in Andradina. The units will require investments of R$ 2.4 billion. Each will have the capacity to produce 82,000 m3 of E2G per year. Currently, these plants are in the phase of contracting the earthworks. With these two new plants under construction, Raízen will now have five E2G projects in progress, all in the state of São Paulo. Bomfim (in Guariba), scheduled to be delivered later this year; Univalem (in Valparaíso) and Barra (in Barra Bonita) are expected to open next year. The Gasa (Andradina) and Vale do Rosário (Morro Agudo) plants are scheduled for completion in 2025. Raízen estimates that by 2031, after all units are inaugurated, the installed annual production capacity will be approximately 1.6 million m3 of E2G.

São Francisco do Conde Biorefinery

Company Acelen

State BA

Starts Operation 2026

Investment US$ 2.5 B

Acelen Renováveis is set to invest $2.5 billion over the next ten years in a biorefinery project near the Mataripe Refinery in Bahia, Brazil. The focus is on producing renewable diesel and Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) from macaúba, a plant that yields significantly more vegetable oil per hectare than soybeans. This initiative is projected to create over 90,000 direct and indirect jobs and generate more than $80 billion in economic activity. Currently in the final engineering phase, construction of the biorefinery may begin within six months and could be completed in 24 months, with operations starting by the second half of 2026. Initially, traditional vegetable oils like soybean oil will be used until macaúba cultivation becomes viable. The second phase of the project involves significant investment in innovation and technology to domesticate macaúba and ensure the entire production process is certified. Discussions with Petrobras are underway for potential partnership opportunities in downstream development in Brazil.
